I notch a 3/4" long x 1/2" deep so that I can place the power of the handle always in the down stroke all I have to do is bring the shaft back up and skip a tooth or so then bring it back down. Works Great.
I used it for pressing pin, nuts and dowels into my wood work as well as doing repair on electric tools and for metal stamping on dog tags.
