My father-in-law recently purchased this little Central Machinery Electric 5 Ton Log Splitter and it's pretty rad. He used a 15% coupon, so his price ended up being about $270 after tax.

Unboxing was easy, and the only assembly required was to screw on the control handle. Took about 20 seconds.

On the site it says the maximum diameter log is 10", so of course we took some huge logs (more like 24" diameter), since it wouldn't be much use if it couldn't at least help us with these big fellas.

    Looks comical, doesn't it? :D

Well, as you can see, it took care of business. And these logs were incredibly hard. We couldn't get them to split at all with a maul. This pile took like 3 minutes and the thing is quiet. And of course since it's electric, we were inside the warm shop when it was in the thirties outside.

You can store it standing up if you take the control handle off, but of course it's more stable stored horizontally.

We made a video of the operation. It's a little weird because I think to keep the operator's hands occupied they made it a two-handed thing, where you press a button with your right hand and operate the press with your left. Works fine.

Of course, as a disclaimer, nobody should ever split a log this big. Stick to 10" ones if you are concerned about the safety of splitting large ones.

Nice review, Ben. Have the same machine, Homelite branded, bought with Home Depot gift cards a few years ago. It's a solid machine. I have found that the machine will meet it's match with some large greenwood rounds, but generally, if it fits in the carriage, it splits it. Good machine.
