We've been Costco members for many years. Prior to our recent move, they were convenient to us. For paper goods, coffee, laundry detergent, and a few other household supplies, an occasional trip to Costco made sense.

In our new location, we're about 65 miles from the nearest Costco. The nearest Sam's Club is about 25 miles. We decided to audition Sam's Club to see if switching was warranted. We printed a one day guest membership pass and hopped in the car.

While the formats, product offerings and values were very similar, we found Sam's Club to be inferior on service. Everything involving people is slow. Customer service desk and checkout: Just like Walmart, Sam's Club skimps on labor, making the process slow. Even the person checking receipts before exit was working too slowly. There was actually a long line to leave the store. How silly is that?

Anyway, we won't be going back to Sam's Club. Costco is far away, but it's a much better run chain.

I've never been a member of any of those stores, but we used to sometimes go with my mother-in-law to BJ's. Nothing very special, IMO. The thing that differentiates Costco from the others, in my mind, is that their Kirkland brand seems to be very highly reviewed for a variety of products. One example is the cult-like following that their urethane golf balls have.
